The Reason That I Wear Fur PHOTOS
Or you could just not wear "real" fur or fake fur or vintage fur, its not like it's any sort of necessity. I don't have any fur fake or otherwise and my wardrobe doesn't feel empty and lacking. There is no profession that I know of except for modeling where fur will have an effect on your career unless you are an ice fisher and an eskamo. I live in Wisconsin (It's 8 degrees outside at the moment) and I have no issue being outdoors. You don't see the people that spend huge amounts of time outdoors like skiers wearing fur very often. And to address LemmonHerk I don't wear leather (anymore) either. Nor do I eat animals or their secretions.
Wearing fur no matter when that animal was killed or how (or whether it was a "cute" animal or one that people don't associate with cuddles and joy) supports a very cruel, unncessary industry. I live in Canada. I wear a gorgeous winter coat that harmed zero animals in its making. I look hot, it keeps me hot. To argue that synthetic fibers are environmentally damaging is to stick your head in the sand about the toxic chemicals used to treat hids of all sorts and especially furs. Wake up. Wearing fur is ugly and narcissistic. If you're truly a beautiful person with a warm heart, you don't need the dead pelt of another living being (soaked in chemicals) flung over your shoulders to make you beautiful and help you brave the winter. Enough is enough.
I am sorry there is no excuse to exchange a living breathing sentient being for fashion. We are not living in a culture that doesn't have a moral options to what we wear, we don't NEED to wear fur, unfortunately the poor soul that you have on your back, around your neck of hanging off your blouse does NEED its fur to live. Try to rationalize all you want about vintage fur, economics etc but in the end you are taking a life so you can think you look fashionable. Fur and other cruelty products will come and go out of your closet but COMPASSION NEVER GOES OUT OF FASHION.
Back in the 80s, I saw a large billboard in the London subways. It was a drawing of a woman with her back to you and over one shoulder was slung a fur stole. The ends of the stole were "fashionably" fringed with fluffy tails. The stole was so long it dragged on the floor as she walked, and the end of each "fringe tail" left behind a trail of bright red blood. The red blood was particularly effective as the rest of the billboard was in black and white. At the top of the billboard it read, "Only dumb animals wear fur." It was one of the most powerful antifur ads I've ever seen. I would love to see that particular campaign revived!
I think you have to go with common sense, because there are definitely arguments for and against wearing fur. Some people will follow their inclinations and some will take a different approach. My choice is ethical, since faux and real fur both have their drawbacks environmentally. To many of us there is simply no excuse for cruelty and that's where I draw the line. My faux fur coats are as warm as the real thing, I assure you and I would have no fear in wearing them in sub zero weather if I had to. I wore one of them during a blizzard and actually got too hot and had to remove a layer of clothing underneath the coat. With today's beautiful faux furs there is no excuse as far as I can see, to wear a coat made from the dead body of an animal. And saying they don't last is equally ridiculous as an excuse. Please! I've seen old furs in antique and vintage shops. They can be so brittle they actually break off. Today's faux furs can and do last at least 20 years. I love the look and feel of fur, but I don't need to kill animals to have it.
