why do people hate it
So any time I see a thread on food stamps, government assistance or welfare (really any type of social help fund) I see people on there who can't stand these systems and want to end them. At times I am that person, simply because I think that the whole welfare system needs to be completely reworked so that the right people are getting the benefits and not just anyone who says they can't work. But I don't that we should completely do away with welfare or any other federal funding that helps people who are in need. have seen many arguements here on people don't deserve welfare. One is that most of the people on welfare abuse the system. Another reason I have seen is that the children who grow up in welfare households are very likely to continue on that path of being on some type of government assistance because they don't know any better. Well I found this link that disproves that thought pattern. debate is simple. Do you or don't you agree with welfare (or any type of government aid/assistance) why?
I grew up in a household that depended on government assistance (welfare and food stamps) and I became a productive member of society that does not need either now. I grew up telling myself that I would never end up like that. My mom had little choice though because my father left her with no job, no car, no money, kids and a stack of bills. She eventually pulled herself up though and is no longer depending on government assistance. So yes this is kind of a personal topic but I won't take offense unless you are being outright stupid and belligerent.
Don't you know? People on GA are living the High Life! With our Escalades, 5 in long manicures, and Coach purses, we make all you hard working schmucks look like idiots. Why work when you can live like a Thousandaire on the Tax Payers dime?In all seriousness, I think people dislike welfare programs because they operate under the illusion that tax dollars are THEIR money. They forget (or ignore) the fact that those on welfare often work as hard, if not harder, in low paying jobs that NEED to be done but are not manned by people with better educations/better opportunities. Basically, the government pays us to be the country's peons.
It's early and I haven't had a lot of sleep or coffee, but I will throw this out there:
I would argue that people basically just don't know any better. Most people don't realize that almost all of us are being or have been by the government at one point or another. Most also don't realize that the idea of the "welfare mother" has been bred into us. It was white women who first received what was then, I believe, called "mother's pension". Once black women attempted to get the same benefits, things turned a little biased.
People also don't consider that tax benefits are a form of welfare. You are benefitting finanically from the government simple as that. It is helping move you and your family along. (There are better examples of this than I can give without a good night's sleep.)
Also, since I'm already going to get flamed, let me just say I am so sick of hearing about my "entitlement attitude." You know who I think has an entitlement attitude? The one's bitching about their taxes.
No, you DO NOT deserve food and housing more than me because you had more fortunate life circumstances and were fortunate enough to find a higher paying job. No, you do not work harder than the working poor, you do not deserve what you have more.
I have a college degree, I still can't find a job. I'm back in college full time trying desperately to improve my chances. I live in a horrible area in terms of finding jobs. I live in Appalachia.
Oh, we could just move, right? If you're poor because of the are, you have the luxury to just move somewhere where there are better jobs. Are YOU going to pay for my UHaul? Oh and more jhobs means higher COL, which means first month's rent I can't afford. Also the same amount as FMR for a damage deposit. but it's that simple, right?
Everyone is entitled to food. Everyone is entitled to shelter. Flame away. I don't give a flying fig.
It needs to be reworked. I know young, able bodied men who get a "check" because of a bad back, ugg hommes, anxiety, and other easy to diagnose, hard to prove "disabilities"' I see women having kids they can't afford because they can. They don't worry if their kids will starve, they know good ol GA is always there for them so why bother with a job or education. I have been to the GA office and seen people yelling at the clerk about how they deserve their benefits. When I needed help while I was pregnant and unable to work, I asked for FS and rental help. They sent me a paper full of other benefits I should apply for. it was like they were throwing welfare at me. there were a system of checks to have it used like it is supposed to be. a TEMPORARY help system to help people get back on their feet, I would be all for it. If you cannot afford the amount of kids you want, go to school, get another job, marry rich, hell turn tricks if you have to. It isn't anyone else's responsibility to put food in your kids' mouths.
I think it's safe to say it needs to be "reworked" like so many other things that are being mishandled today. While it's undeniable that the services are needed due to the occasional hardworking, responsible family falling on hard times, however, I think in this day and age it's become more of a crutch for some of the less classy members of society to survive without working.
I bet if the entire system was thoroughly investigated, you would find that there were far more people depending on the system than what is necessary. I think many of the people that are continuing to add to their families while using social services (including disability) are perfectly capable of looking for work, but there's other issues going on such as alcoholism, drug addiction, mental issues, etc. which prevents them from taking responsibility for the own actions, not to mention just plain stubborn laziness.
The government cannot reasonably go forth with using the resources it would take to the extent of investigating every case, so the problem continues. I am just one of those people who believe in helping people who have first tried to help themselves. I have read posts here and on my birthing board where there is a household full of people who don't work (and they usually dont disclose why they don't work) and who are trying to get food stamps but can't for whatever reason (one person was on WIC but stated that WIC doesn't feed 4 people, she did not understand what the rest of us meant when we kept telling her WIC is for her and her child, not her, her SO, her sister and her BIL as well as her child). Everyone is entitled to food and shelter. That doesn't mean that everyone is entitled to a 3 bedroom house with a garage. If you work hard enough and can afford a 3 bedroom house with garage though then hey good for you! for the unemployment issue, I am going to soon know exactly how you feel. I am a very certified very educated person but I am losing my job due to the federal budget cuts (of course they are cutting from the bottom and are cutting a program that helps others in need, but hey! people want less spending right). I know that I am most likely going to be on unemployment and may even have to try to get WIC (my DH will hate that because he doesn't like handouts, he is way to prideful for that). Does that mean that I am some lazy woman who is poppin out a kid just to get better benefits so I dont have to work. NO! I would rather know that I am keeping my job and be a working mom but I am being left no choice. If you have any concerns about your own health or the health of your child, you should always consult with a physician or other healthcare professional.
